What Makes Reading Important?

Reading is important for so many reasons. But, what do sixth graders think? And, what do their parents and grandparents think? Although I usually hate homework on the weekend, students have a special assignment for this weekend.

They must answer the following questions:

Why do you believe reading is important?
How do you think reading skills will help you throughout your life?

In addition, they must interview either a parent or grandparent and ask them these questions to find out their opinions about reading.

It will be interesting to hear opinions. I wonder if there will be much difference between students and their parents/grandparents?

My mother said "reading is important because you can gain experience and wisdowm from other peoples situations and life experiences. Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers. If you quit growing, learning, reading (i.e after graduation) you become stagenat so reading contributes to a lifetime of growth.

Good reading skills help notonly make reading easier but they help in every subjuect in school, as well as later in a job/career. If you have good reading skills it will be easier/more enjoyable and you will be more likely to continue reading throughout life.

Aline and Laney,

I definitely agree with your moms' thoughts regarding reading. Tomorrow, we most definitely must talk about one comment in particular, Reading also lets your mind go to places you have never been yourself.

Thanks for the comments,

Reading is important at a young age and as an adult. Reading not only helps you understand grammar, it helps you to sound out words you don't know. Reading is a part of any daily routine in any field of work. The more you read the quicker you get at reading, and remembering what you have read. Reading also lets your mind go to places you have never been yourself. It lets you experience so many different things. Reading more will help you grow and understand more and more each day.

My Mom says that reading is important because it helps in every aspect of life. She says that if you can learn to enjoy reading at an early age, that enjoyment will only grow as you get older. She said that she remembers that she loved to read the Nancy Drew book series when she was younger. Her babsitter at the time, gave them to her and then she passed them along to her cousin to read. She still loves to read today and rarely leaves the house without some kind of book or magazine in her hand. Good reading skills have helped her with everything from school, spelling, directions, to being able to sit down, relax and just enjoy reading a good book, which, she says, is always better than the movie!

I believe reading is important because it opens so many doors for a person and allows one to pursue any walk of life that interests them. Nearly every activity in life involves some form of reading skill. Reading builds one's vocabulary, being able to articulate one's self and can vastly enhance one's ability for learning. I think good reading skills well help Dillon throughout his life by allowing him to delve into furthering his education, enhancing his vocabulary, articulation and communication skills and most importantly allowing him to continue learning with endless limitations. Reading infinately expands one's mind, knowledge and possibilities.

It can be a wonderful adventure to expand our imagination, to build critical thinking skills and share ideas which help to shape who we are and the world we live in."

Thank you to all of the parents that took the time to discuss reading with your child.

It was obvious from the comments that the parents put a lot of thought into their answers, and value reading.
