I was watching the Cavs play, on their way to their eighth win in a row, when a Liberty Mutual commercial came on. Normally, I would start flipping channels, but this ad caught my eye. In fact, I rewound and watched it twice more.
Then I started thinking about students in Reading Workshop. If a day was filmed, what would it look like? How often does someone do something that might be worth including in this ad built on people helping people?
Previously this year we talked about Sportsmanship in the Classroom. Students had many great ideas about how this looked and how it made the class, and the school a better place. Do you see it in action? Could this video include clips from us?

What about it students? Have you seen someone that you think should be included? What did they do that modeled responsibility towards others?

I have noticed Josh is always there to help. In language arts during study island time even if Josh is working on his blog or reading a book he always stops to help. When you are changing classes and you drop something like I do a lot he is there to pick it up. He sits next to Mr. McGuire and he even needs help Josh tries. On the playground playing basketball when I fall or get knocked down which happens a lot he is there to ask if I am ok or in math helping RJ when he needs help with a problem. Josh will always be there when somebody needs help because he is the best helping hand there will be.
After watching the video I thought I know someone who acts that way. I would like to bring the person up.
The person is Madison. Madison is a great helper. Whether it's on the playground, lunch, recess, or even in the class room.
The person that she helps all the time is Erica. When Erica needs her she always there no matter what. Madison is the kind of person that you can always rely on. For example when Erica is the last one in line Madison always goes to the back of the line and comforts her so she doesn't feel left out.
Madison is not the only one. There is a lot of people who does good things for others. I think if people help each other all the time the world would be a better place.
Yes,I have seen someone do a good thing before and I think that is a very important thing in life.
I think that the people who have done something very good to help other people should be included!
I saw that Kelsey helped a little boy put a jacket on him, and he was struggling so hard to get that jacket undone, so he could go to lunch!
I remember what happened the other day I saw Andrew help the new kid Cody get used to our school Logan Elm. He made friends with him before he came to our school so that might help him like this school better. I think that Cody likes this school better than he would have if Andrew didn't help him.

I saw that Kelsey helped a little boy trying to get his coat off of him, and he was struggling so hard to get that jacket undone, so he could go to lunch! Then after she got it off the little boy politely told her thanks and walked off.
Kelsey was a very good person to do this and I think that everyone should do this from time to time not all the time trying to find someone but when they see someone who needs help they should help them because maybe that person would learn to do that and that has taught them a lesson.
When I was watching this video one person came to my mind and that is Justin. The other day when we were outside for recess, Noah my best friend was running and he hit his head on a slide, he went to a fast stop and just set there for a little bit, when everyone else went on and played Justin stopped and helped him up. He also talked to him to cheer him up and he did and I really think this is sportsmanship.
The person that stands out to me and always helping someone out would probably be Noah. Noah is always there when anyone needs help and I think that's why Noah always gets help when he needs it.
The people I see him helping a lot are also people that help him a lot. I think that relates to the commercial. Noah has helped me out a lot too.
One time at gym Shaylee got hit in the face with a dodge-ball and Noah was almost the first one over there since he was on her team.
I think that Noah would help anyone no matter what if they are his friend or not. Noah would have to be one of the best helping hands in this school and I don't think that will change about him either.
Helping people is great because they will help others. When you help someone you will feel good about your self. At school one day I saw Garrett help Zach pick up his pencils, crayons and crayon box off the floor because it fell and popped open. That probably made Garrett happy for helping and it probably made Zach happy to have someone being a good help when he drops anything or if anyone else drops something.
One good thing that I saw was when Cody.l helped our new student Cody.j by sitting with him and hagging out with him. I think Cody.j is starting to memorize names and starting to like it here (I think) So My point is if was not for Cody.l would he be talking or hiding in the corner. So thank you Cody.l.
I think that people should help other people when they need help.
I have seen people do good things for people.
When the sixth grade are eating lunch and the little kids come in and hang there stuff up and one kid was having a really hard time,Justin would help the little kid hang his/her stuff up.
There is a girl that rides my bus and her name is Pacey. One day on the bus when we where about to go into the school she ran to catch up with me. I wondered why she was trying to catch up with me when she handed me my book. She said I had dropped it on the floor of the bus and it had slid under the seat when we came to a stop. Sometimes when the bus drivers look to see if we left stuff on the seats they don't look under the seat so I would have lost my book if it had not been for her. Thank you Pacey (it was a library book too)!
There is a girl in my class named Katie. One day I saw that there was a kindergardener that was having a hard time hanging up her coat. Katie got up from the lunch table and helped the little girl hang up her stuff. Just think if Katie was not there then there might not have been anybody else willing to help that little girl. That is what I call responsibility.
I think that Bethanie should be included in the video. Beth and I were out at recess and a little boy fell. When Beth saw she ran over to help the little boy get up and pick up the milk that he dropped. Even though someone else was with the little boy Beth choose to help him.
When I was watching the video there was someone that came to me and that person is Heather. She is a good friend and she is really nice. She has done some nice things too.Heather and I are in band together and at the end we have two people put stands away. Someone picked me and Justin to put the stands away. So Heather took my drums over to the office for me.
I noticed that since Kasi sprained her elbow, Kennedy helped her carry her books. I think this should be included because Kasi said she didn't need help but Kennedy helped her anyway.
One active of kindness that I saw that would fit good in the video was when Tyler was sitting at the lunch table alone. Justin went over there and sat by him. Then as soon as Justin sat down beside him he had a smile on his face.
Someone who helped me is Tyler. Monday at recess, I fell on the Basketball court, playing against Tyler. The second I fell he helped me up. I was feeling down and Tyler gave me words of encouragement to get me back to my feet. Guess what. Because of Tyler's words of encouragement we ended up winning the game 24-20. If that is not sportsmanship, I do not know what is.
When I was asked to comment on this post one person came to my mind, Micah. Micah come to my mind because whenever anyone drops their stuff Micah is always there to help, even if they drop it from halfway across the room he is there. Micah also helps anyone with Study Island all the person has to do is ask. Micah will help out in anyway he can, he is just that kind of person.
Another person that comes to my mind is Ian, he is a smart kid so other students ask him for help all the time and he will no matter what.
Eric is another student who will help out in anyway possible, he is a student who will not give up in what he thinks. This is what makes him a person that you can ask for help and will give it a hundred percent.
Recently Ian, Micah, Eric and myself were asked to exchange computers in our class room. It took us a pretty decent amount of time to do it almost two hours actually, but we didn't complain and had fun. We messed up and rewired a couple of them wrong but Ian and Micah fixed that while me and Eric changed some of the other computers, it was a challenge but it just shows how ever one has a part of them that is willing to help.
I have seen someone who should be included in this video. Madison is always helping Erica every time I look at her. For example, when someone put bunny ears on Erica, Madison told him to stop. He kept doing it because he just wanted to be funny, so Madison just moved Erica's chair toward her more and turned it to where he couldn't do it anymore.
Madison is always helping others, not just Erica. I think if everyone was as helping as Madison, we would all be in this video
Kindness. If one person is nice to you, will you be nice to them? Be nice to some one else? What's the meaning of kindness? Is it something you do because some one wants you to do? Or because you are being nice?
Madison helps Erica with her computer work. Kaitlyn watches this. Kaitlyn picks up my sweatshirt when I drop it. Rylee witnesses this. He picks up Ian's book. Do you get my point? When one person does something kind, the witnesses do the same.
This is not the only way that the world should operate. If you are not kind to your peers, then how do expect them to be kind to you? How can you expect a favor from some one if you can't be bothered to do them a favor?
Madison is a good friend to have because she is all ways helping she is all ways helping Erica and people if you need help gust call madison!!
Another person came to mind when I watched that video and that person was Mrs. Conrad. She is always up in the class room trying to help people learn more out of everything they already know. That makes me feel like I just want to help others right when I see that. She is always willing to help whenever you need it. That is why helping people is so great and it always makes you feel good even on a bad day.
Today I watched a commercial and it was about people helping people out. I thought wow! if only that was true. Madison and she comes to school and she has a smile on her face even on rainy days. I wonder why she brings smiles but now she has got everyone smiling to each other so it is better. That is why we have a really good school.
I see my friends help kids everyday. I see them help kids read with them, I see they teach them how to do a question and help little kids by telling them what's right and what's wrong. For example: my friend Josh helps other kids with Study Island like when they don't understand the question.
At Laurelville Elementary there are tons of kids that make a difference everyday! Most kids are very helpful! Responsibility is a big deal in our lives! Being a sixth grader is big deal you set examples for the whole school so if your nice and helpful the little kids follow you and do what you do!!!
Erica had to go to the office for a minute and we were switching classes Erica wasn't back yet so Savannah pick up her stuff and took her books to Erica's next class for her so that she wouldn't have to go back and get her stuff. That was really nice of her to think of Erica. Erica probably thought the world of Savannah for getting her books so she wouldn't have to go back to that class to get her books. This is one of the many examples of kids being helpful.
I think it is so cool when someone does something nice for someone then that person that got the help passes it on and helps someone else.
Such as when everyone is on their blogs and Eric asked Hadley to proof read his post or comment and Hadley helps him and says you might want to give more detail then he uses her advice to improve his blog. Then Eric helps Josh and helps Josh fix the same thing that Hadley had helped Eric with and it goes on and on.
I have seen so many people at Laurelvlle elementary that need to be included. I have seen so many people show responsibility to other people. Like last year in fifth grade at recess Cody L. helped Jason and Cody help to get them in line to go to lunch. I noticed the next day that there were a lot of people who went to help Jason and Cody help get to lunch. It's like Kindness is contagious.
It's all over our school. Like when Ian and Eric and Josh and myself put the new monitors and new keyboards and mouses. I noticed that when they started almost everybody wanted to help put the computers in place. Another way Kindness is contagous.
If you somebody help somebody you should do the same. Spread the kindness make it contagious.
Someone I've seen who has shown responsibility in this school. Well first I don't really notice people showing responsibility. Maybe I don't pay attention to it or think about. But now I have put some thought into it, there is one thing that I think shows responsibility.
The thing I think that showed responsibility is when Josh, Ian, Micah and Eric helped put in the new computers. When Mr. McGuire asked them to help, they didn't say no. When they accidentally did something wrong, they didn't whine about it, they went back and fixed it. Everybody in the whole sixth grade benefited from it and I think this is a true example of responsibility.
One time I was in the classroom and I saw Josh help Madison on a question in science. Then Madison helped me on the same paper when we were working together. Then I helped Micah on the paper. But I don't know if Micah helped anyone.
Someone that I think should be included is Hadley. I think that Hadley should be included because she helps anyone in her path. The person that she helps the most would be Erica. She helps Erica just by doing little things like opening Erica's her locker and things at lunch. It makes me happy to see people doing things for people.
At Laurelville Elementary I saw sportsmanship when Micah droped his stuff Josh helped him pick it up of the floor. Rj saw Josh help Micah pick his stuff up. Rj decided to help pick up Hannah stuff.
Yes I have seen a very nice person do something that was a very sportsmanship thing before and it wasn't too long ago.
One day when I was in the lunch room eating I saw a kindergarten boy trying to hang his book bag on the hook but he couldn't reach it so a girl in my class name Karly got up from her seat and went over to help him put his book bag up on the hook.
When I watched the commercial it reminded me of someone that helps people out a lot.
That person is Kaylee. One day at lunch a little girl was having trouble getting her jacket of off and she came up to Kaylee and asked her if she would help her. Kaylee helped the little girl get her jacket off so she could go to lunch with her classmates.
Everyday when we switch from Language arts to social studies I see Justin either holding the door for Erica or helping her get her stuff into her bag.
Even though I see this everyday I still think it is very nice of him to do this, and that is great sportsmanship.
But then I see Madison and she is like the nicest person I have ever met. She always there, and she's very helpful and that's how she is known best. She is a good friend.
Another person that comes to mind when we watched this is Garrett.
Garrett is always trying to help on the bus and in the class room. Even outside of school. For example when Garrett, Seth and I went sledding and Seth and I got thorns stuck in our face Garrett was the first one to notice and help us and ask us what happen.
Another person that comes to mind is Josh. Josh is always helping me when I'm hurt, sad, and mad or just to give me comfort. Last time I was at Josh's house I busted my lip on a truck bed and Josh was shooting hoops with his little bro but as soon as he saw me he stopped and help me.
Garrett, Noah and Josh are all very help and never be mean or unhelpful.
Another person that I saw is Justin because he's always helping people with math and stuff.Like when I didn't know a few fomula's,so he help me on them.
After watching the video it made me think of a person. Her name is Shaylee.
One day I saw Shaylee help a little girl. She was trying to get her coat and book bag off so she jumped in and helped her. So now sometimes the kindergarten kids ask for her help.
When Mr. McGuire said that we need to write a comment I immediately thought of Noah.
I thought of Noah so fast because when ever I see someone that needs help with something, Noah is always there. For an example: Nathan dropped his things Noah was the first one to help him. That's not all that Noah helped with. I will tell you one more kindness thing that Noah did.Example: When anybody gets pushed down playing basketball, Noah is always the first one to ask them if they are OK.
That is still not all that Noah has helped with. I think that Noah has helped with more stuff then any other person this year.
I have seen a person who should be included.
Who I think should be included is Justin G. One day I was having trouble on study island and he came over to me and helped me pass.
The person that I think of when I think of responsibility is Noah.
When I drop my things or another person drops their things he is always right there to help. When people make fun of other people or talk about them, if he doesn't think it's right, he stops them.
If everyone in Laurelville Elementary, or 6th grade alone was like him, there would be way more than one video about responsibility!
I believe with reading this, people will grow up more and be responsible. Hopefully, by the end of the year, I will be able to write about every person in the 6th grade.
I see people cheering for other people at recess when they play basketball. When they get cheered for they feel happy and cheer for other people too.
Another example is when Mrs. Blubaugh helps kids out during reading. She helps them with understanding the questions. Then they can help people who don't understand the question they're on in Study Island, Math, Social Studies, or Science.
One time I was in Circle D skating rink with my cousin and our friends. We were skating around and this little 5 or 6 year old boy named Jacob fell down while he was skating. Our friend Chelsea helped him up.
Later on that night that same boy saw a little girl who was having trouble putting her skates on. The boy that fell helped the girl put her skates on.
That same night just before me, my cousin, and our friends were about to leave, we saw the little girl help someone who fell down the stairs.
When I watched the video I thought of Heather.
Why I thought of Heather is because when Katie had to stay behind in science one day Heather took Katie's stuff to her locker for her. Heather took it with out Katie even asking.
I think Hannah Har should be in this video because at the beginning of the year she helped Bethany pick up her books when everyone was just watching. I've never seen Hannah do that before. I would have figured she would have just stood there and watched but she walked over there and helped her pick up her books.
I see people all the time when they are playing basketball fall down. When someone falls down Noah is always there to help them up.
Out of all the 400 and some students at Laurelville elementary Kennedy would fit right in the Liberty Mutual advertisement. I think this because on Thursday March 25 Kennedy did some thing that she often dose and and helped someone else besides her self. What she did was bought Joey and I a candy bar because we woke up late and could not get anything to eat without being late for school.
Certain acts of kindness that I have seen are ones from out of the blue and when you least expect it, so many little things that make a difference happen...
I've seen many acts of kindness at school but none like this. Kasi.R fell and badly sprained her elbow. The next day she came to school and my mouth dropped wide open because her elbow was wrapped in gauss and a sling was hanging around her neck with a swollen elbow in it.
Kasi has a hard time carrying her books from class to class. So Heather carried Kasi's books to the next classroom even though she was capable of doing it on her own.
Kasi said that Heather didn't have to do that for her but that act of kindness shows me that there are people who care for others like, Hannah Har. An amazing friend who likes to recognize people for their good deeds. She is one of the many people who help out and brighten up the faces at Laurelville.
I wan't to tell you about a kind
person.
Her name is Mrs. Bowers. Today we were in math class. She is our IEP teacher. She did not know we were coming down. She didn't get to eat her lunch yet but it did not matter. She said come on in I'll help you and she was so kind. So then I was like I can start without you so you can eat. She said thank you and I said you're welcome.
When I was watching the commercial it reminded me of someone that helps other people almost every day.
This person is Justin. Justin is always there when something bad happens to someone. like yesterday I saw Justin helping Garrett on Study Island. Today Garrett, Eric, Josh, and me was playing basketball and I tripped over Eric's foot and Garrett asked me if I was alright and then helped me up. That reminded of the commercial that I watched.
An act of kindness I've noticed at school this week was when I dropped my pencil during math class, and Hannah picked it up for me. I really appreciated that since it was my only pencil that was sharpened, and because I'm not that much of a Mr. Nice guy to her. She has done a lot of other acts of kindness for people, I would not be surprised a bit if she was in at least ten of these comments. Hannah would be a great person for this video.
